Sunny Isles Beach
Geographically, Sunny Isles Beach is located on a barrier island in northeast Miami-Dade County. The city's east and west boundaries are the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway respectively. South of Sunny Isles Beach is Haulover Park and Bal Harbour (across the Haulover Cut). Oleta Park lies to the West and just north of Sunny Isles Beach is Golden Beach and Aventura. It begins on 155th Street and Collins Avenue and ends at about 194th Street and Collins Avenue. The population is just over 15,000 according to the 2000 census, but I suspect it has grown a fair bit due to recent development over the last 5 years.
Sunny Isles Beach is considered a major center of South Florida's Russian community, with many Russian stores lining Collins Avenue, the main thoroughfare through the city. It has become a major resort area and developers, such as Jorge Perez (the largest developer in South Florida and on Forbes 400 List), Gil and Michael Dezer (they bought over 11 acres of prime oceanfront property several years ago), Donald Trump and Turnberry Associates have invested heavily in construction of high-rise hotels and condominiums. Sunny Isles Beach was the 2008 site of MTV's annual "Spring Break" celebration, with headquarters at the local Newport Beachside Resort.
Some of the premier condos include Ocean Two, Trump Palace, Ocean Four, Acqualina, Turnberry Ocean Colony and Trump Tower 1.
Nearby attractions are the Oleta River State Recreation area, the state's largest urban park, and the Aventura Mall, one of the largest and fanciest malls in Florida. Oleta Park has over 1,000 acres and is a haven for mountain bikers, runners, picnickers and nature enthusiasts. Canoes and kayaks can be rented and paddled there as there are numerous little streams. There are a number of barbeque grills and pavilions throughout the park. The Aventura Mall consists of many name brand departments stores, a large multiplex cinema, boutique stores and a wide variety of restaurants, which make it ideal for the entire family. Across the Intracoastal near Biscayne Blvd.(US-1), there are many fine restaurants and stores like Whole Foods, Fresh Market, Barnes & Nobles, Houstons, Costco, Borders and Chef Allen, one of the top rated restaurants by Zagat.
